How SkillSurvey works

The process is simple and the results are fast.


Candidates and their references can be entered one-by-one or in bulk via an import. There is no limit on how many references can be entered (a minimum of one reference is required for each candidate).

The system automatically generates an email or a text message which is sent to references from your organization. The email or text includes a brief description of the reference request and a link to your reference questionnaire.

In a few minutes, references can complete the questionnaire. Each reference is asked to verify their identity at the start of the process. After submitting the form online, references are directed to a thank you page, which can be fully customized and branded, and can be used to generate new business leads.

As soon as the questionnaire is completed, reference information is available. You can easily access this the reference responses in a format that makes sense for you and your clients: responses can be printed, downloaded or emailed.

How do I initiate a reference check in SkillSurvey Reference?

Initiating a reference check for a candidate is a simple process. To begin, enter a candidate’s reference information for as many references as necessary and hit submit. The system sends an automated email or text message to the reference(s) with a link to the questionnaire. Candidates and their references can be entered one-by-one or in bulk via an import.

How will I know when a reference completes a questionnaire?
Users can select to receive automatic notifications via email once a reference submits their response, or users can login to the system to view their dashboard for status updates.
How quickly do references respond?
While response times vary, most references respond in just a day or two since the questionnaire can be completed at their convenience via desktop, smartphone or tablet.
Can we include our branding or logo?
Yes! We offer several ways to highlight your brand. All system-generated emails and text messages sent to references will appear as though they were sent from your organization. Organizations can include their logo on the reference questionnaire. After submitting the questionnaire, references are directed to a thank you page, where the message can be customized and include your company logo and a link to a web page of your choice. Additionally, customers can include their logo on the reference response document.
Can I customize the questionnaire?
Customers may create any number of custom questions and custom questionnaires with the following question format options:

  • Multiple Choice
  • Single select – radio box
  • Single select – dropdown
  • Open ended
  • Rate one item on a scale
  • Rate multiple items on a scale

Questions can be marked as mandatory.

What reference response formats are available?
Reference responses are made available in PDF format. They can be printed, downloaded, or emailed directly to your client from SkillSurvey Reference.
