SkillSurvey’s Analytics Team, including Cynthia A. Hedricks Ph.D., Disha Rupayana Ph.D., Leigh Puchalski, and Advisory Boardmember Chet Robie Ph.D., provides more scientific research on the validity of reference checking. In this research, the team looked at reference feedback from 20,000 job candidates’ references. The team analyzed the narrative comments provided by references for work-related strengths and areas of improvement for various job categories.

The research supports the reliability of reference checking and that it should not be seen as a hiring “check” or desultory task. It also shows that when reference checking is conducted with care and prudence, it provides critical value in the hiring process and when references are guaranteed confidentiality, they provide actionable comments related to a job candidate’s strengths and areas for improvement.
